I was looking forward to a fun girls’ night out with a friend at Delta Bingo, but unfortunately, my experience was marred by an unpleasant encounter at the front desk. As soon as I entered the building, a woman at the front loudly questioned my age from across the room, shouting, “Are you old enough to be in here? Do you have ID?” This happened well before I had even approached her, drawing everyone’s attention and making me feel incredibly embarrassed.I completely understand that ID checks are necessary in establishments with age restrictions, but there was absolutely no need for her to shout at me from such a distance. It felt highly inappropriate and discriminatory, especially since I’m a 38-year-old who simply happens to look younger than my age. It’s not my fault that I have good genes and apparently look under 18.No one should have to endure such a public and humiliating experience, especially for something as benign as looking youthful. I wouldn’t have minded being asked for my ID if it had been done respectfully, when I was actually in front of her. Instead, it felt like my appearance—being a short Asian with good skin—was unfairly targeted.I was so outraged and embarrassed at the time that I didn’t know how to handle the situation or who to speak to. But after reflecting on it, I feel it’s important to share this experience so that others don’t have to go through the same thing. I hope Delta Bingo will take this feedback seriously and train their staff on how to conduct age checks in a respectful and discreet manner.
