Located in the vibrant city of Alajuela, Costa Rica, Casino Club Colonial presents itself as a more intimate gaming experience compared to larger establishments. This casino primarily caters to slot enthusiasts but also offers table games, all within a generally quiet and comfortable setting. While it boasts a loyal clientele and a commendable restaurant, potential visitors should be aware of a few operational nuances, particularly concerning closing procedures.
Visitors frequently describe Casino Club Colonial as having a nice, carpeted atmosphere that is typically rather quiet, especially on its second floor. This makes it an appealing option for those seeking a more relaxed gaming environment. While slot machines appear to be a primary draw, "board games" (likely referring to table games) are also available, though they can become noisier later in the day. Some patrons have found it enjoyable for an hour or two of casual play, with the potential for exciting wins, such as free game drawings that have offered significant colones.
The casino generally receives high marks for the demeanor of its serving staff. Patrons consistently praise the servers as being nice, friendly, and courteous, often providing great-tasting drinks. However, a notable and recurring concern revolves around interactions with certain employees, particularly during closing hours. Several reviewers describe experiences with staff members, especially upstairs, who were perceived as rude, stern, or abrupt when prompting guests to leave, sometimes before guests had received their change or drinks. This contrasting behavior between the floor staff and some closing personnel has led to frustration and a deduction of stars in some reviews, suggesting an area where customer service training could be improved.
Beyond the gaming floor, Casino Club Colonial is home to a highly-regarded restaurant. Long-time patrons attest to its quality, with one reviewer calling it "superb." It's also noted to be busy for lunch, indicating its popularity among both casino guests and local diners looking for a good meal.
Casino Club Colonial is a solid choice for a casual gaming experience in Alajuela. Its comfortable, generally quiet atmosphere, friendly servers, and excellent restaurant are significant draws. While the issues with certain closing staff are a downside that the management should address, many loyal patrons continue to frequent the establishment, some for decades. If you're looking for a low-key casino with good food and a generally pleasant environment, and are prepared for a potentially abrupt closing experience, this spot is worth considering.
I have been going to this casino since I first came to Costa Rica 20 years ago and it continues to be the only one I frequent even today. Their restaurant is superb as well.
The casino was great, and clean. We won a free game that gave us 15,000 colones free, from some drawing just for playing at the slot machines. Of course we ended up losing that and more 😂 The servers were nice and the drinks tasted great. The only issue we had was when the casino was getting ready to close. We were waiting on our drinks and change, and an employee came up behind us telling us they were closed. Other people were playing slots still, yet the guy stood behind us just watching us. After about two minutes still waiting for our drinks he clapped his hands and said "FINISHED" in English. Definitely not how you speak to customers. After he did that, I said "We are still waiting for our drinks and change from the server" That's when he finally walked away and started telling others they are closed. The server came to us with our change and drinks and was very nice, and told us we can play for 15 more minutes down stairs. Why couldn't that man show respect to the customers like the servers do? Anyway, I would return again, because I'm not going to blame the casino over 1 rude employee, but I am deducting 1 star because of it. He definitely needs better training on customer service.
I’m an adult and don’t appreciate being spoken to like I’m a child. They close at 9:30 and at 9:20 an employee upstairs literally reprimanded me. He told me in a very sternVoice I had to leave NOW. Meanwhile downstairs no one was pressuring the clients to leave. I speak Spanish fluently so it wasn’t a language issue, just rude employee. Won’t be going back.
Nice atmosphere, mostly carpeted. For the most part rather quiet. Later in the day noisier especially on the board games. 2nd floor almost always quiet. Do not go at night. Help very friendly & courteous.Have not eaten in their restaurant in many years, but it is busy for lunch.
