Grand Casino Escazú Guide and Review

Grand Casino Escazú, located in the Alajuela province of Costa Rica (though often associated with the greater San José area), presents a mixed bag of experiences for gamblers and visitors. While some praise it as a top spot in the region for its gaming options and friendly atmosphere, others express significant concerns regarding game fairness and service quality.
Overall Impressions and Ratings ⭐⭐⭐
User ratings for Grand Casino Escazú vary widely, from enthusiastic 5-star commendations to stark 1-star warnings. The average sentiment suggests a place with potential, particularly for poker enthusiasts, but one that struggles with consistent service and live table availability, leading to a somewhat polarizing reputation.
Gaming Experience: Hits and Misses
Live Table Games
The availability and fairness of live table games are areas of contention for visitors:
- 🃏 Blackjack: A recurring point of frustration is the limited availability of blackjack tables. One reviewer noted only a single blackjack table open for an entire night, which was consistently full with players waiting. This can be a major deterrent for those looking to play popular card games.
- 🎲 Roulette: The roulette experience here is described as unique. Instead of the traditional wheel and metal ball, the casino utilizes a "lottery ball system." While different, one player found it enjoyable and even managed to win.
- 🛑 Baccarat Concerns: A very serious concern was raised regarding the fairness of Baccarat. One user reported an astounding instance of the dealer drawing 10 "naturals" in a row on their very first shoe, leading to a strong belief that the game was rigged. This particular review strongly advises against gambling here due to perceived lack of fairness.
- 🎰 General Table Availability: Beyond specific games, one negative review stated that "only machines are working," implying a general lack of live dealer action at times, further reinforcing the issues with live table game availability.
Poker Room
The poker room at Grand Casino Escazú generally receives more positive feedback. It is described as "small but nice," attracting players who appreciate "very good competition."
Common observations about the poker room include:
- ♠️ Typically only one or two tables are running, usually a 1/2 game.
- 💲 The casino uses US dollars for poker play.
- 🗣️ The atmosphere can be quite lively, with "very loud" table talk and players frequently using their cell phones at the table – a contrast to typical US casino etiquette.
- 🤝 Despite the noise, players generally found the people at the tables to be "very nice."
Service and Amenities 🛎️
Service quality appears to be a significant pain point for some visitors.
- The service has been described as "pathetic."
- Patrons were advised to either bring their own liquor or be prepared to actively seek out staff for drinks and food, indicating a lack of attentiveness and proactive service delivery.
Location and Accessibility
While the casino is officially located in Alajuela, it's in Escazú, an area often considered part of the greater San José metropolitan region, making it a potentially convenient option for those staying in or visiting the capital area.
Final Thoughts 🤔
Grand Casino Escazú offers a varied experience. For poker players, it seems to be a decent spot with good competition and the convenience of playing in US dollars. However, those seeking a full range of live table games, especially blackjack, might find options limited. The serious accusations of rigged games and consistent complaints about poor service are notable drawbacks that potential visitors should consider before planning their visit. It's a place where you might have a "fun night" and win, or you might leave feeling frustrated and cheated.
Best casino I’ve found yet in San Jose Costa Rica. Unfortunately they only had one blackjack table open the entire night, which was completely full with a line of people waiting to play. Ended up playing roulette, it was interesting, they use a lottery ball system instead of a wheel with a metal ball. But still a lot of fun and wants some money.
Small Poker Room but nice with very good competition usually only one or two tables going and they use US dollars with a 1/2 game usually!

I had heard from a friend that this casino is rigged. And I believe it to be true. At the Baccarat table the dealer drew 10 naturals in a row on the very first shoe I played. That doesn’t happen by accident. NEVER COME HERE TO GAMBLE. You can’t trust this casino to play fairly. Stay away, stay away, stay away.
Fun night of poker. Ran my 200 to 1000. In a couple hours. Then left.Table talk is very loud. And players talking on their cell phone. So that is much different than in the USA. BUT VERY NICE PEOPLE THERE
