Grand Sierra Resort and Casino

The Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno, Nevada, positions itself as a premier destination offering a wide array of entertainment and lodging options. Based on recent guest experiences, it presents a mixed bag of impressive amenities and areas ripe for improvement.

The Grand Sierra Experience: What Guests Love ❀️

Many visitors praise the resort's sheer scale and variety of activities. It's not just a casino; it's a full-fledged family-friendly resort:

  1. Spacious Accommodations: Guests frequently highlight the generous size of the rooms, often featuring large windows with pleasant views, such as overlooking the golf course. While some rooms may be described as "dated," they are generally noted as clean and well-maintained.
  2. Abundant Attractions: The resort boasts a plethora of attractions beyond the casino floor, including an arcade, escape games, and a popular swimming pool (even if the kids' pool can get crowded). Special events, like the opening of the ice skating rink with pro skater performances and free hot chocolate, add to the appeal. Unfortunately, skating rentals can sell out quickly on busy days.
  3. Convenient Location & External Options: Its location is deemed convenient, with numerous restaurants both within and outside the resort, providing diverse dining choices for guests.
  4. Exceptional Staff Service: Several reviews commend the resort's staff. From welcoming front-line employees to efficient service personnel like Brandon M, who received five stars for his quick and kind resolution of a tub issue, the dedication to guest satisfaction is evident. Valet and bell services are also singled out as exceptional.
  5. Recent Improvements: Some returning guests have noticed and appreciated "serious improvements" made to the hotel, contributing to a very nice overall stay.

Areas for Improvement: Where the Resort Could Shine Brighter ✨

Despite its many positives, guests have pointed out several areas that could enhance the Grand Sierra experience:

  1. Check-in Efficiency: During peak times, such as Thanksgiving break, guests reported long lines at check-in due to an insufficient number of open counters (e.g., only three).
  2. Room Condition & Cleanliness Nuances: While generally clean, one review mentioned the carpet feeling "dingy," suggesting that some areas may need an update to match the overall spaciousness.
  3. Casino Environment: The casino floor's ventilation is a recurring concern, with one guest noting it was "a little too smoky," indicating a need for better air quality management.
  4. Service Bottlenecks: Long waits, specifically at popular spots like Starbucks (15-20 minutes), suggest that staffing or operational efficiency could be improved in high-traffic areas.
  5. Casino Payouts & Change Policy: A significant concern for some patrons is the casino's change policy. Guests report that change machines are often not loaded with coins, effectively forcing players to "donate" amounts under a dollar or endure a long walk to a crowded cashier line to collect small change. The perceived expiration of tickets, potentially leading to the resort pocketing unclaimed small amounts, has raised a point of frustration and distrust among some visitors.

Final Thoughts and Recommendations πŸ“

The Grand Sierra Resort and Casino offers a substantial and diverse resort experience in Reno, particularly appealing to families and those seeking more than just gambling. Its wide range of amenities, spacious rooms, and often commendable staff contribute to many positive stays. However, addressing operational inefficiencies at check-in and high-traffic service points, improving casino floor ventilation, and revisiting the casino ticket payout policy, especially regarding small change, would undoubtedly elevate the guest experience further. For those willing to navigate potential crowds and minor inconveniences, the Grand Sierra remains a solid choice for a multi-faceted Reno getaway.

We booked this hotel on a whim during Thanksgiving break. It was super crowded and there was a long line during check in because only 3 counters were open.We got higher floor room facing the golf area. The room was very spacious and we loved the big windows. However, the carpet felt dingy. When we were there, it was their opening day for the ice skating rink. There were pro skater performance for the opening celebration and free hot chocolate. Unfortunately, the skating rental was sold out that day. So, we decided to head to the swimming pool. The kids pool was crowded but we still had fun there. The resort was quite big with lots of attractions inside it. There was arcade game, escape game, and other fun family things. We opted to have lunch and dinner outside the resort as they were lots of restaurant around.

They have made some serious improvements to this hotel. Our stay was very nice. Everything was really cool, it’s a little too smoky so I think they could benefit from better ventilation, and I waited about 15 to 20 minutes in line at the Starbucks there to get coffee they could fix that but other than that pretty solid.

The location was convenient. Lots of things to do. The rooms are good. Had a little issue with the tub being clogged but the worker Brandon M helped & he did a fantastic job. He was kind, quick & efficient. Thank you Brandon. Five stars for you!

They kind of force you to donate anything under a dollar because the change machines aren't loaded with coins anymore. They can do coins but they just don't fill them since COVID times but that's been over for years now. You have to donate unless you want to walk all the way across the casino to a crowded cashier line. If you don't donate the tickets expire so they're probably pocketing a ton of people's change. It might not seem like much to any single person but with the hundreds of thousands of tickets that probably don't get turned in every year it probably adds up.

We had an exceptional stay after moving from a different hotel in the area. The staff was welcoming, our room was dated but clean. Valet and bell service were exceptional. We will definitely be coming back.
