Southern Cross Sports Club

The Southern Cross Sports Club, located in Brisbane, Australia, presents itself as a local hub offering a blend of dining, social, and gaming facilities. While categorized as a 'casino' in some directories, the user reviews primarily highlight its role as a traditional Australian sports club, focusing heavily on its bistro-style dining and member services, often including gaming machines ("games"). Visitors should expect a club environment rather than a full-scale casino resort.

The Dining Experience: Hits and Misses 🍽️

Dining at the Southern Cross Sports Club garners a range of feedback, from highly positive to distinctly negative, suggesting a varied experience. On the positive side, many patrons praise the excellent value for money, particularly noting an "Awesome $16 menu" that is hard to find elsewhere. Specific dishes like the "$16 steak and salad meal" are frequently complimented for being "cooked perfectly," and the "Morrocan chicken dish" also received positive mentions for its quality and "Large sizes for the price." The overall sentiment from these reviews is that the club offers "Yummy lunch" options at "good prices."

However, the dining experience isn't without its detractors. One review detailed a particularly disappointing and "Totally inedible" experience with a "$24.00 for Curried Prawns and Rice with braised Asian vegetables," criticizing the disproportionate amount of bean shoots and sprouts compared to prawns. This indicates that while some menu items are highly regarded, consistency across all dishes might be an issue.

Service and Staff: A Tale of Two Experiences 🧑‍🤝‍🧑

Staff interaction is another area where experiences are polarized. Several reviews commend the "Lovely friendly staff" and "Friendly staff" overall, with one user specifically stating that "all the other staff were very nice and friendly!" This suggests a generally welcoming atmosphere from the majority of the team.

Conversely, a significant negative review detailed an encounter with a "supposed dining room 'manager'" who was described as extremely "rudely" dismissive and unprofessional. The incident involved the manager warning a customer about their table choice without interest in their explanation, even "turned her back on me whilst I was talking to her." This highlights a serious concern regarding particular staff members or management, severely impacting one visitor's willingness to return. It's clear that while general staff members are appreciated, a single negative interaction with a senior staff member can overshadow an otherwise pleasant experience.

Value for Money 💰

A recurring theme across the positive reviews is the exceptional value for money offered at the Southern Cross Sports Club. The consistent mention of "good prices" and "Awesome $16 menu" (including steak and salad) strongly suggests that the club provides generous portion sizes and affordable meal options, making it an attractive choice for budget-conscious diners.

Ambiance and Facilities 🎲

The club can be "pretty busy with the games," indicating popular gaming machine areas which are common in Australian sports clubs. Despite the potential for busyness, one reviewer noted that it "doesn't doesn't affect wait time too much" for dining, suggesting efficient operations even during peak periods. The atmosphere seems geared towards a lively, casual club setting.

Overall Verdict ✨

The Southern Cross Sports Club in Brisbane offers a decidedly mixed experience. It shines in its value for money, particularly with its affordable and often well-received dining options. Many visitors appreciate the generally friendly and welcoming demeanor of most staff members. However, potential diners should be aware of inconsistencies in food quality for certain dishes and, more critically, the possibility of encountering very poor customer service from specific staff, which has led some patrons to vow not to return. For those seeking an affordable meal in a casual, bustling club environment, and willing to overlook potential service hiccups, it could be a suitable choice. However, if consistent quality and impeccable service are paramount, experiences may vary.

Hi, don't have high expectations for this one. Dined today for lunch - $24.00 for Curried Prawns and Rice with braised Asian vegetables. Someone help them please! Curry had 5 prawns in it and maybe 1kg of bean shoots and sprouts mixed through the whole curry sauce and rice.... Totally inedible. Sad. Maybe an explanation would be good on this

I took my elderly mum for lunch today. I have never been spoken to so rudely by the supposed dining room “manager” ever. When we arrived we tried to look for a table for two but couldn’t find one that wasn’t reserved so we sat at one end of a table that seated 12 or 2 x 6 (easy to separate) after we finished our meal she approached me and warned me that next time that I was NOT to sit at such a large table and that she had to accommodate a large group elsewhere (in the section next door) I was explaining that there weren’t any smaller tables available when we arrived but she was not interested and turned her back on me whilst I was talking to her. There were many large tables in the room next door so I don’t see what the problem was. Well I don’t need the bad attitude from a waitress and don’t worry I won’t be back as there are plenty more places to dine with MUCH better food and MUCH better service. Shame because all the other staff were very nice and friendly!
