Crown Casino, situated in the bustling border city of Poipet, Cambodia, functions primarily as a casino resort, attracting visitors looking for a gambling experience. While the core casino operations generally receive favorable remarks, the attached hotel facilities present a more varied and often challenging picture, reflecting the general state of the border area itself.
For those drawn to the gaming action, Crown Casinoβs actual gaming floor is consistently described as very clean and well-kept. Reviewers note that the facilities, while perhaps not brand new, are quite acceptable for their purpose. The casino is reported to be active, providing a functional environment for play.
A notable highlight is the staff and services. Multiple visitors have praised the casino employees for being friendly, nice to talk to, helpful, and providing good service. This positive interaction contributes significantly to the overall casino experience.
Additionally, the casino provides the benefit of good air conditioning, offering a welcome respite from the Cambodian heat.
The hotel attached to Crown Casino receives a broad spectrum of opinions, ranging from acceptable to highly critical:
Several guests found the hotel to be "pretty seedy and old fashioned," with some even describing it as "very dirty and old." One significant security concern highlighted was a non-functional balcony door lock, allowing potential external access to rooms, which is a serious safety issue. Rooms are also noted to offer "nothing more than a bed and a wardrobe," suggesting minimal amenities. Some visitors felt the hotel was not good value for money and "not worth staying there," especially given reported prices (e.g., 900 baht/night, considered expensive by one reviewer for the quality received).
Conversely, one review, specifically from February 2023, offered a more positive assessment of the rooms, stating they were spacious, equipped with air-conditioning, clean, and free from pests (no cockroaches, rats, or bed bugs). This review also mentioned the presence of hot water for bathing and, notably, that all meals were free, which could be a significant value-add for guests. This discrepancy might suggest variability in room quality or perhaps improvements over time that are not consistently reflected across all visitor experiences.
The experience of visiting Crown Casino is often intertwined with the perception of its immediate surroundings in Poipet. The border area itself is described by some as feeling insecure, like a "building site," with "shifty people about hustling for money." Visitors arriving from Thailand should also be prepared for potentially significant and unexpected fees (e.g., 1500 baht) to enter Cambodia, which some have felt were excessive or a "rip-off." While the casino is conveniently located about a two-minute walk from the border checkpoint, the journey to get there can be less than ideal for some travelers.
Crown Casino in Poipet appears to be a functional destination for gambling enthusiasts, offering a clean gaming environment and pleasant staff. However, the accompanying hotel facilities are a point of contention, with concerns over cleanliness, age, amenities, and even security being raised by several guests. Potential visitors are advised to manage their expectations regarding accommodation and be mindful of the border crossing experience into Poipet. While the casino floor provides a decent experience, the hotel portion requires careful consideration and may not be suitable for those seeking comfort or modern amenities.
Unfortunately, the balcony door lock doesn't work, so anyone from outside can enter the room, it was expensive 900 baht/night
